IMPORTANT: The latest official builds now have built-in filesystem support and it works perfectly. So for most of the users, this mod is irrelevant. Only use this mod if you really need the features listed below.
SCRIPTS: The build scripts are attached. On your ubuntu system, extract it under your home directory and go through the README.txt file for details.
UPDATE: The work on this mod has been stopped. You can continue yourself with the scripts attached here. Check the OpenWrt link above if you are looking for some alternatives.
patched dropbearmulti (patched to use /opt/libexec/sftp-server)
This file have to be used with Asus Firmware Restoration Utility or by using tftp client. Please search the forum or check the wiki for more information on using these tools.
Busybox included into firmware does not have support for swapon and swapoff functionality therefore you must to install and use busybox from optware.
Kudos !! Is this firmware built on 17201 or 16994 since 16994 seems far more stable.
The kernel is latest from the trunk. However, the router tools are same from 17201 build. I used splitter3 & unsquashfs-lzma tools to extract the root fs.

Do i need to put the router in recovery mode to flash or just simple tftp ?
I never tried tftp but used the asus firmware restoration utility which requires you to put your router in recovery mode.
Some questions:
is cp437 included ( needed for FAT32 ) ?
Yes, cp437 is missing. I'll prepare a new image soon...

what has been removed ? ( if any ... )
Nothing has been removed. Just enabled FS support in kernel and included cdc-acm module (required for 3g modems, not tested though).
Tested the detection with an old Giant 3G modem ( acm ) and the router detected ttyACM0 and ttyACM1. Not tested the connection yet ( no sim card available ).
I am having a weird issue... I had installed build 17201 on my RT-N13U/B and I wanted to switch over to this build to get filesystem support.
I am not sure what I am doing wrong but after flashing from the Firmware Restoration utility (and rebooting the router) I keep seeing the same old firmware. My settings are still there too.
The firmware restoration utility goes all the way without errors.

Any ideas?
Nothing is wrong. The mod firmwares are based on build 17201. The settings still the same for me too.
The diference is that the router detects and properly mounts VFAT and ext3 formated drives.
Cool! That worked! Now I have installed Optware on it. But I am seeing something that was reported in other threads... The usb stick is not getting mounted on reboot.
Code:
root@Kaylee:~# mount
rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
/dev/root on / type squashfs (ro)
none on /dev type devfs (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
ramfs on /tmp type ramfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw)
devpts on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
root@Kaylee:~#
If I unplug the drive and plug it back in it works. Reading some other threads they mention fixes involving scripts. Are those relevant here with USB / filesystem support built into the firmware?
