So I have a router that, as I understand, is too new for the recommended 14929 build. I have already flashed my WNDR3700v3 from stock firmware to a trailed build: 20675 mini, 02/11/13, as instructed by the wiki. The full build name is:
dd-wrt.v24-20675_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNDR3700v3.chk

I looked through this thread and this thread. People were trying out build 19342, but that appears outdated now.

Now, my questions:

1.) Why are they using a build with nv64k in the name? Is it confirmed that this router NEEDS an nv64k build? The peacock thread says the following:

I circled the relevant section. The wiki for this router does NOT mention anything regarding using nv64k builds. Is that an omission? Is nv64k necessary for this router? Or optional? I followed the link to the NV60 / NV64 upgrade thread but this model is not listed there.

I can see that my router has 64k NVRAM according to the status page in dd-wrt. Does ANY router that has 64k REQUIRE a build with nv64k in its name? Or not necessarily? Finally, is it ever possible for a single router model to accept both build types, nv64k builds as well as non-nv64k builds?

*****

2.) Which build number should I use? From what I understand, that build 19342 used to be the obligatory mini.chk build given on the wiki for first flash. Now the wiki gives me 20675. Can I assume that this build number is safer/better/less problematic? Should I just stick with this same build number and get a generic version of it -- that is, NOT trailed?

Really looking forward for some help. Much appreciated!

Bump. Could I get some assistance with #1 at least?

Basically, can any router ever accept both nv64k builds OR non-nv64k? If someone previously flashed a netgear wndr3700v3 with a nv64k build, can I assume that I should always flash nv64k builds only?

Thanks!

I don't know the answer, however I know what everyone is doing. K26 64k on this router. I'm doing the same with a v3 and having fine results.

Ok great, thank you! That still helps.

Which build # are you having success with?

I'm thinking I should go with 20675, same # as given in the wiki, and use standard type? Or do you have another suggestion?

You got it. I'm typing from the first successful one, just to happen to be doing a second as we speak.

The wiki trailed build is
dd-wrt.v24-20675_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNDR3700v3.chk

Which links to the brainslaer r20675 build here ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/02-11-2013-r20675/broadcom_K26/

I'm currently using the BIG 64k build just fine (AFTER flashing the trailed build) (7.7mb)
dd-wrt.v24-19342_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv64k.bin_.zip
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/02-11-2013-r20675/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-20675_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv64k.bin

I don't think I'd touch the mega at all for fear of breaking. It doesn't really offer that much more. It's 7.8mb and Peacock says the limit of this 8MB flash chip: 7995392 bytes.

Note I waited a good 3-5 minutes and had a drink after the trailed flash,
Then 30/30/30,
Then had to power cycle to get it to pull up and make sure it worked,
Then Flashed the Big build and had another drink for 2-4 minutes,
Then 30/30/30
Then power cycled again.

Worked great and I have a nice buzz Very Happy

Update:
For some crazy reason 20675 would not for the LIFE of me install on this second router.

I used 19342 trailed + big and everything is groovy now.

Are you saying that you got 20675 big to install on the first router but not the second? Or did you only flash 19342 big on both (I'm talking about AFTER the initial trailed build)?

Just double checked, Looks like I had 19342 on the first router too. I thought I had 20675 on that one. :/

Every time I would install the 20675 big it would seem to go fine but just say "mini" in the firmware status no matter what I did.

r20675 is way too big to fit in 8MB flash based routers but there are other builds after that which should fit.

Oh really? Hm. That extra ~130 kB makes the difference? Or is it something else? I'm comparing
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/02-11-2013-r20675/broadcom_K26/
and
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2012/06-08-12-r19342/broadcom_K26/
and the difference between dd-wrt.v24-20675_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv64k.bin and dd-wrt.v24-19342_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv64k.bin is just 7933 KB vs. 7805 KB, respectively.

Is it because Netgear routers have a little less flash space than other routers? Peacock mentions it:
Quote:
(Netgear Routers often cannot flash standard builds because of the extra partition they have on the flash chip.)

UPDATE:

Never mind, I get it. This must be the reason:

Btw, do you think there's a build that is more stable than 19342, which could fit?

willpower101,

Can you show any results for your two antenna signals relative to each other? I'm wondering if I'm having a severe issue with my 2nd antenna -- the 5GHz one. I currently have no way to detect 5GHz with either my laptop or my wireless adapters. (I'm ordering a dual band adapter today.) But I did put the second antenna into 2.4 GHz mode. That is, in DD-WRT, it's the one labeled "wl1". I put it into N-Only (2.4 GHz) mode. And this is what I get:

Ignore the middle signal titled "HOME-7A78" (it's my existing gateway which I want to replace). Also ignore the earlier part of the graph where I was a further distance away. The top signal in green is 2.4 GHz coming from the wl0 antenna. The bottom one, "DD-WRT-N" is from wl1. Look how weak it is! The router was at that moment half a foot away from my laptop.

Is there something seriously wrong with my second antenna? Do I have a faulty router??

PS These results are from the 19342 big firmware. It flashed just fine.
