maybe you don't like Luci web-gui or you just don't want a web gui at all (console freak )
Openwrt is more flexible with this kind of customizations...compared to dd-wrt

...but I have successfully installed dd-wrt on a couple of old Buffalo Airstations and was very proud of myself. I've just bought a TP-Link WR2543ND and after 24 hours I'm significantly regretting my decision. The firmware is useless.
I'd like to put dd-wrt on it but have not found anyone who has done this successfully. I saw this thread but don't know much about Open wrt and after spending an hour on the website and wiki I think I know even less.

Hey Guys. I've just got DD-WRT working with my TL-WR2543ND.
Follow these steps and you'll be fine.. I guess.
1- Download factory-to-ddwrt.bin file from ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/02-11-2013-r20675/tplink_tl-wr2543/ 2- Perfrom a 30/30/30 reset. With unit on, hold down reset button for 30 seconds. Unplug the power to the unit while continuing to hold reset button and wait 30 more seconds. Plug unit back in and continue to hold the reset button for 30 more seconds. Then you can let go.
3- Log back in to router with the default router username and password, goto System Tools/Firmware Upgrade and browse to the factory-to-ddwrt.bin file you've just downloaded and load it up.
4- Wait until it finishes doing its thing and hits 100% on the reboot bar. Connect to router by ethernet if wifi (Did not work for me at first) does not work and goto page 192.168.1.1 and login with default ddwrt username, "admin" and password, "admin".
5- Happy networking.
Note:
*On the router for me the 2.5ghz light does not show and only the 5ghz light is showing. However 2.5ghz will also work once you set it up in the dd-wrt menu. Everything else works perfectly and I've never been happier.
* I performed it all whilst on the latest firmware (as of 31st of March 2013) available on the tp-link website.
* Thanks to user Salexa for posting the links.
