I need some help please. I have read the stickies and the Peacock and I am still lost.
Objective: I want to share my internet connection wirelessly from my house to my parents house about 400 feet away using WDS.
My internet is from Verizon via a usb modem that is shared wirelessly on my iMac.
I have 2 x Linksys WRT54GS v7.2 routers that I installed 5/24/08 build of DDWRT on over a year ago. I wanted to put one at my house and one at the folks with them both being WDS routers. I dont plan on using the wired connections on either.
I have configured using the instructions, but the Join function does not work. I also notice that devices that connect get a 192. address instead of 10. range even though DHCP is disabled. Is the build I have bad?
I downloaded a newer mini version from Dec 09 based on the Peacock. When I try to use DDWRT to upgrade it takes a couple seconds, reboots, but still shows the old version?
I'm lost. Is this a firmware issue, user issue? Where do I go now?

Buddee's suggestion is a sensible one. It is possible that you're still seeing the old page because it's stored in your browser, which believes it still current. Clearing your browser cache ("temporary internet files" if you're using Internet Explorer under Windows) and refreshing the page ought to display the updated page on your screen. _________________ Netgear WNR834Bv2 DD-WRT build 14311 nokaid (Primary)

-Mini release could not be installed on WRT54 GS 7.2(not enough room for that), only Micro is available for this device.
- you do not need Join feature for WDS network.

At 400 feet, are you sure the routers are even connecting?
I mean, if they are just stock routers, @ 400 feet,
you would still be looking @ low signal strength with line of sight.
If there are any kinds of trees, objects, walls, etc in the way,
your connection will be very week, if it can connect at all.
Before you try all the testing, you should try and set 1 to client mode,
take it to your parents house, wired connect to that router, and see if you
can get a decent connection to your main router.
If you can't even connect - all your other efforts don't really help.
You'd have consider getting some large directional external antennas for each router
to connect outside and point to each others houses. _________________ Soylent Green Is People !

agreed....the GSv7.2 isn't known for being a powerhouse router. It generally has trouble inside a home...let alone 400 feet signals.
And...turning up the Tx power doesn't help...it only creates more noise. You can only try a better antenna (directional)....but make sure it connects at the house first before you move it that 400 feet.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I will try a browser refresh to see if it flashed right.
I haven't tried it at 400' yet. I am trying to get them working here in the house before I try distance. The funny thing is that I can connect to my iMacs wireless connection at about 300ft and its on the opposite side of the house. I figured a real router, in the window facing my parents house would have no problem connecting to another router in their house that faces mine.

Man-O-Man, that must be some house.

I can access the iMacs connection outside at about 300 feet. This is even thought the iMac is on the opposite side of my house with NO line of site to where I'm standing on the lawn.
Put a router in your parents window facing yours. Put your router in your window, facing theirs. Try a site survey to see if you can see it. Connect as a client bridge for now. Check the wireless status page and see what the signal strength and noise are. Post those.

Excellent advice. That's what I'd do, too. _________________ Netgear WNR834Bv2 DD-WRT build 14311 nokaid (Primary)

Received signal strength is too weak by a factor of perhaps 20 db -- that's a ratio of 100 to 1. Pretty hopeless. _________________ Netgear WNR834Bv2 DD-WRT build 14311 nokaid (Primary)

I ended up buying a Cradlepoint MBR900 router which I can plug my verizon USB modem directly into. Not only did this simplify my broadband setup (no more internet sharing on iMac), but it has enough punch to reach my folks house in G mode. Its not a super strong signal, but I think placing a repeater on the garage will give all the signal they need.
In general I am very impressed with the Cradlepoint product for the $100 i spent.
